About My pet

By Deb Bailey

In the Worlds of Fire series, each story is set on a different world within a network of portal worlds. Featuring alchemists, vampires, and various shifters (including phoenixes, wolves, and dragons) who each play their parts within the story universe. Jaydon, the hero, is a gargoyle shifter from the portal world of Granjai. I created Jaydon's pet, Delphy because on his world there's a special relationship between the shifters (in this case, gargoyles) and birds. The gargoyle shifters have a connection to nature, and they also respect the animals in their care.

I liked the idea that a small bird that appears to be very cute and non-threatening would actually be advising Jaydon and keeping him up on news – and probably a bit of gossip as well.

Here's an excerpt from Metamorphosis where the heroine, Asira meets Jaydon's pet bird, Delphy.

A small yellow bird flew in and perched on a shelf above one of the desks. It chirped and then turned its head to study her. Another chirp, then a turn of the head to the left and to the right.

"What do you think?" he asked.

"Nice bird."

"No, I was asking her."

"You were what?" She looked at him, then at the bird again, then at him. "Does she talk?"

"Yes."

"What does she say?" She'd just go along with it for now. She'd be done and then hopefully get picked by a mentor who was more serious and less messy.

The bird chirped again, then lifted up and flew back out to the balcony. She perched on the railing then flew away.

"She's busy this time of day," he said. "Goes to the park and meets her friends. But she likes you."

"Um…that's nice, I guess."

"I trust her judgement. Come back tomorrow morning and we'll begin."

"What?" This had to be a joke. "You're picking me because your bird told you to? Seriously?"

"Yes. Is that acceptable to you?"

Did she have a choice? "Yes. Thank you." She picked up her bag and stood up. "I'll be going, sir."

One of the things I enjoy is watching videos on social media posted by pet owners. The pets have their own personalities, and their owners certainly consider them to be members of the family. So, I wanted to show a pet that isn't "just" a pet but is also a friend and companion. Delphy is trusted by Jaydon, which works out very well for him in the end.

MEET MY PETS IN SPACE 6 PET – EYN THE ALIEN TURTLE

By Veronica Scott

Some years the story idea comes first for me and other years the pet concept is first and drives the story. This year they arrived together, which made things easy. My family has always enjoyed turtles as pets. We’ve had a lot of the common green turtles and many red-eared sliders over the years. My brother is especially keen on turtles and not only has several as pets, he also does rescues and has hand raised baby snapping turtles until they were old enough to be re-released into the wild. I decided to make my space pet a turtle this year in honor of my brother, who is one of my most devoted readers and fans.

Eyn is an alien turtle of course and he can and does leave his shell most days. I always felt a bit sorry for terrestrial turtles that they had to carry their shell around all the time and couldn’t go out  unencumbered at least occasionally so Eyn has that freedom. He returns to his shell nightly and can close it up tight, and while he sleeps the biological mechanisms in the shell structure replenish his energy. He belongs to Raelyn, my heroine, who is a senior stewardess on board the Nebula Zephyr interstellar luxury cruise liner and is also a symbol of her home world and its belief system.

He can also function as a piece of living jewelry for her. Eyn not only sets off the events in the story, he’s also quite involved in dealing with bad guys along the way to the plot’s resolution and the Happy Ever After ending. It’s a fun challenge to me each year to ensure the pet is more than just a pretty set decoration but is also important to the events. I think Eyn manages all of that quite nicely although he’ll probably need a nap in that shell by the end of the novel.

Did I mention he has three eyes?

Of course we see other members of the ship’s crew from past stories but this can be read as a standalone.

The excerpt – Eyn getting into trouble:

Raelyn noticed her carryall was open and various items were strewn around the table. “You’ve been busy and naughty,” she said to Eyn, clucking her tongue. The moyed loved glittering objects and was known to haul small things away to secret caches. Luckily he knew better than to leave the cabin so she never lost anything permanently.

Eyn was standing with his front paws on the odd glass bubble she’d bought at the bazaar on impulse at the end of the quick sightseeing trip to the planet. He was staring fixedly into the misty center and his tongue flickered in and out as if he was trying to taste the captured air inside. Disconcerted by how intent her pet was, Raelyn reached for him. “You’ve seen your reflection before for star’s sake. Be careful or you’ll push it off—”

She hadn’t even finished her sentence when the moyed ducked, trying to avoid her and as he moved with his usual sudden speed, the ornament rolled in the opposite direction, plummeting to the deck. The cabin was carpeted but as if in slow motion Raelyn saw the bubble land on a stack of other items from her shopping trip and shatter into dozens of pieces.

A burst of oddly scented air struck her, smelling of hot desert and vanilla and other pleasant things she couldn’t place. For a moment she was dizzier than ever and actually staggered a step or two as the room whirled around her. Chirping, Eyn jumped onto her arm and scurried to her shoulder, rubbing his head against her chin.

“I’m fine but that piece of old glass isn’t. Twenty credits, totally wasted. When will I learn not to give in to impulses? Maeve,” she said, addressing the Ship’s AI, “Can you have a robo clean this up? I’m running late today.”

“Of course, although if decontamination is required there will be a small charge to your account.”

“Fine, although I don’t think there’s any issue with a chemical spill. There was nothing but air inside.” She sat Eyn on top of his shell, stepped carefully around the broken glass and rushed into the bathroom. It’d be worth a credit or two not to have to start her day cleaning up a mess.

 The blurb:

Raelyn Cantorini, senior stewardess on the interstellar cruise ship Nebula Zephyr thinks the alien artifact she bought on the last planet the ship visited was just a pretty glass orb…until her pet Eyn knocked the ornament off a table, shattering it and sending her into an infinitely repeating time loop.

Stuck reliving the same day over and over, Raelyn has only hours to try to save the ship and everyone on board from dying in a terrible catastrophe. As she tries to solve the mystery of what happens to the ship right before midnight each time the day repeats, Raelyn meets Kev Gordonn, the former Special Forces soldier turned actor and finds herself falling in love with him. Each time the day repeats, she learns more about him while he has no memory of her. Can she persuade him they’ve met before? Will he trust her enough to help stop the Nebula Zephyr’s destruction?

And if they do save the ship, will that reset time for Raelyn?

The Griffins in Escape from Nova Nine

by Carol Van Natta

Do you love romance, adventure, and pets? If so, let me tell you about the griffins in Escape from Nova Nine. You’ll find them in the Pets in Space 6 science fiction romance anthology.

The Ethics-Challenged Pet Trade Invented Griffins

My space opera romance series, the Central Galactic Concordance, is set in the far future. Genetic engineers are strictly forbidden to tinker with humans or cornerstone animal species. The ethics-challenged fancy pet trade gets around this by making up species and selling them for premium prices.

Designers use Earth’s fossil record to “re-create” extinct species, from miniature dinosaurs to dire wolves. They also draw inspiration from millennia of myths and legends to create fantasy creatures. Or, as you’ll see in the story, Western-mythology griffins.

Griffins Are Cute and Fierce

Legendary griffins are the size of a lion, with a lion’s body and tail, but with an eagle’s head and wings, and talons instead of paws.

Pet-trade griffins are mostly bird, with mottled feathers designed to mimic fur. Across the dozens of registered breeds, they range in size from the size of a 4-month-old domestic kitten to the size of a Jack Russell terrier. They fly, they’re social, and will eat almost anything.

A Secret Asteroid Mine

Zade and Julke, the main characters in Escape from Nova Nine, are prisoners in a secret asteroid mine. Extracting the priceless ores is dangerous work. The mine owners kidnap workers because they want to keep the secret of the asteroid’s location. The easiest workers to catch are minders, people with extraordinary mental talents, because they’re considered second-class citizens.

No one knows why the mine also has feral populations of griffins. The mine staff and guards think of them as pests to be eradicated. The prisoners know better. People who watch the griffins and look out for them tend to live longer. Here’s an example of what I mean.

In this excerpt, newly captured prisoner Zade has been assigned to a workgroup with long-timer prisoners Lantham, Sutrio, and the intriguing Julke.

Sutrio unexpectedly set the cutter down. When Julke went to see if Sutrio was in trouble again, her friend pointed to the lower left corner of the gravity plate. “Look.”

She didn’t know what she was supposed to see until she caught the unmistakable thrash of a griffin tail. Unlike the common griffins like Moonlet, stealth griffins shunned the busier human habitation areas. Only Sutrio’s animal-affinity talent would have noticed it.

Stealth griffins looked as flat as a solar cell. Their feathers were dusty mottled gray, and could color-morph to blend into the rocky scenery. This one was lying flat up against the wall where the plate was embedded. It must have gotten in during the downtime and been there all morning.

The griffin stood, shook itself. Without warning, it sprang up and landed on the shoulder of Zade’s suit, then wrapped its thick, barbed tail around the back of his helmet. Within moments, the griffin’s feathers mimicked the colors of Zade’s suit.

A wondrous smile lit up his face.  “Hello, little one.”

Julke cleared her throat and spoke loudly for the benefit of the guards. “Yes, that’s right, the little readout is the one to watch.”

He turned to her, wide-eyed, and made the sign for “sorry.”

She waved away his apology. Everyone should have an enchanted moment like that now and again.

Sutrio laughed silently and held out her gloved hand to the griffin. It opened its beak and worked its throat like it was vocalizing, Luckily, the machinery noise covered it. The guards might investigate, otherwise.

The griffin pecked at Zade’s helmet and vocalized again.

Sutrio’s eyes jittered a moment. Her expression went slack.

The griffin launched from Zade’s shoulder and flew toward the airlock. It veered away at the last moment and circled back around toward Zade.

“Blowout!” Sutrio’s voice was loud and sharp.

Julke’s stomach went cold as she scrambled to her feet, stumbling to avoid the still-cycling scanner. She grabbed Zade’s shoulder and pointed to the airlock where Sutrio was headed. “Run!”

Trade Secrets

by Cassandra Chandler

I’ve been having so much fun writing the adventures of the aliens and Earthlings who meet and fall in love in The Department of Homeworld Security series. It’s always great to meet new characters, both main and tangential. With fifteen titles in the series, there are a lot of them!

I can’t help having favorites, like the adorably sweet Vegan, Cyan, or the jovial, yet temperamental, four-armed Lyrian, Craig. Right up there at the top of my list is a simple Earth cat named Meredith and her three not-so-simple kittens.

The mystery of the space kittens has been developing for quite a while now—ever since the three of them gained the ability to move around the Coalition warship that they call their home. We first get a hint that something is a bit different about them when the calico kitten, Patches, meets an Earthling named Buddy, who accidentally stowed away on their ship in Homeworld for the Holidays. Patches looks like an Earth kitten, but the more they interact, the more Buddy realizes that she’s much smarter than any cat he’s ever met—and maybe some of the people!

It’s been really fun playing with this storyline. The aliens, who have limited experience with cats, just assume all kittens are this way. Meanwhile, when Earthlings spend any time with the “space cats,” they almost immediately see that these kittens are extraordinary.

After her encounter with Buddy, I started thinking about Patches’s siblings more, and that’s when I met Bandit.

With his marmalade tabby looks, Bandit takes after their dad—an Earth cat named Freddie that we met in Export Duty. I love orange and white striped tabbies! As far as temperament, Bandit is much more like his mom, Meredith. He’s content to be with the people he loves and just wants to give and receive affection.

Having one incredibly rambunctious sister and another who’s incredibly…ambitious sometimes gets in the way of spending quality time with his people, and he can end up in the middle of his siblings’ arguments, trying to sort things out. Most of the time, he tries to avoid them entirely by hanging out with his absolute favorite person, a Sadirian named Xan.

As a pilot, Xan gets to leave the ship a lot. Bandit is Xan’s constant companion on those expeditions, sometimes sneaking aboard and hiding to make sure he gets to join Xan on his missions. Xan loves having the company, especially on long trips when he’s just ferrying people around and has to wait for them to finish their business so he can take them wherever they need to go next.

When the pair meets Gwen, the Earthling quickly sees how special they both are, and it doesn’t take long for them all to want to form their own little family. But to learn more about that, you’ll have to read their story, Trade Secrets, in the Pets in Space® 6 anthology!

Excerpt:

Bandit craned his neck back so he could look up at Gwen. He rubbed his head against her chin, purring loudly.

“Oh, sweetie, you shouldn’t do that,” Gwen said. “With my allergies, I’m going to have to take such a shower after this.”

Despite her words, she cuddled the kitten closer to her chest and kissed his head. Bandit’s eyes drifted shut and Xan swore he was smiling. He was also purring.

Gwen’s brow furrowed. “It’s weird. Normally, if I’m in the same room as a cat for a minute, I can’t stop sneezing. But you don’t seem to be affecting me at all even though you’re all up in my face.”

She cautiously sniffed Bandit’s head. He stretched his neck, butting his nose against her cheek, and Gwen laughed.

“He’s a space cat.” The words were out of Xan’s mouth before he’d really thought about them. Cyan and Zemanni both stared at him.

Xan shrugged. “Like anything we say at this point is going to make things worse.”

“He is not a space cat,” Cyan said. “He is an Earth cat. He was simply born in space.”
